Takeover post from: LA Hindmarsh
Sitting around the campsite one night at Jamboree I found myself talking to a number of artists who had previously participated in Syllabus – a national, collaboratively-produced alternative learning programme whose alumni includes @sanderson_ben, @ilkercinerel, @lucysteggals & @swimonbaybliss.
Learning from their experience and advice I went on to participate in the programme myself in 2018/19 with artist advisors @mssonyadyer & @helennisbet. Photo: Wysing Art Centre
Through which I was able to review and present my work alongside my Syllabus IV cohort at @eastsideprojects and @guestprojects. Photo: Wysing Art Centre
As an outcome of opportunities and contacts shared amongst the Syllabus participants in January 2019 I undertook a residency at @scottishsculptureworkshop which enabled me to produce a new body of work…
…and experiment with new ways of incorporating materiality into my film and performance practice including metal work – Being moved isn’t going to get us anywhere, 2019, silver gelatin print, steel, banana skin, and ceramics – Emotional Handles, 2019, ceramic
Invited by fellow Syllabus IV participant Kirsty Russell I hosted an event Practicing Concern as part of @underpinning_ in Aberdeen reflection on the ways in which work and friendship overlap, as a way of working outside of funded art world structures. This project was later adapted into an exhibition at @aptgallery for @artlicks Weekend 2019. Here we are performing @amymaypickles’s work Collaboration is.
This project also enabled me to experiment with my writing practice developing a text to be used as part of a reading group, event and publication with Underpinning. 8. Finally following on from my involvement in Syllabus IV I was selected for New Contemporaries 2019 with my series Screen Studies and as a New Contemporaries alumni I will be undertaking a residency at the British School of Rome in 2021.
